Turkish Universities in the European Research Area

Dear Policy-makers, University managers and Researchers,

We are pleased to see a successful and growing participation of Turkish Universities in European Union Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation, including Horizon 2020. To further unlock the research potential and scientific excellence of Turkish Universities, we see the need to further explore how we can better contribute to and exploit research and innovation opportunities arising in the European Research Area (ERA).

As the six leading Turkish Universities participating in the EU Framework Programmes, we have taken the initiative to organize a Conference on “Turkish Universities in the European Research Area”.

We cordially invite you to this Conference that will take place in Ankara, Turkey, on October 8-9, 2015. The event is organized by Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi in cooperation with Bilkent University, Boğaziçi University, İstanbul Technical University, Koç University and Sabancı University and with the support of the European Commission and TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey).

The Conference will primarily focus on discussing the ERA principles and priority actions. More specifically, the first day of the Conference, October, 8, 2015 will aim to highlight the ERA priority actions adaptable to Turkish Universities and other research institutions, discuss how Turkey can better benefit from and contribute to ERA and ultimately lead the way to the development of national initiatives.

The second day of the Conference, October 9, 2015 will aim to raise the awareness of universities, research organizations, industry and researchers on Horizon 2020 funding instruments, which contribute to the functioning of ERA. Key initiatives such as the European Research Council, Marie Sklodowska Curie grants or the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) will be presented and discussed.

The afternoon of October 9 will also offer the opportunity to foster collaborations for a successful participation in Horizon 2020 calls on Energy, Health and ICT research.

It would be a great honor if you – as representative of Turkish higher education institutions, European and national administrations, companies, business associations, and technoparks, as well as researchers and opinion leaders – could join us in this event where inspiring discussions on fostering ERA-oriented actions and related institutional best practices will take place.

Sincerely,
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Acar
President of Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi
