Prof. Dr. Sibel Erduran

Event Details
The teaching and learning of scientific practices have emerged as significant educational goals. The Next Generation Science Standards in the United States, for instance, have recently placed a strong emphasis on promoting scientific practices in school science. What are scientific practices? How do they relate to the nature of science, scientific methods or scientific inquiry? The event will address such questions from philosophical and pedagogical perspectives. Theoretical perspectives on scientific practices and how they relate to the nature of science will be discussed. An empirical project based at Bogazici University and funded by TUBITAK-Marie Curie Cofund Brain Circulation Scheme* will be presented. The project investigated how scientific practices can be infused in initial science teacher education. The impact of an intervention was assessed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Implications for curriculum reform, teacher education and science teaching and learning will be discussed. (Seminar will be held in English)
