INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE COURSE ON LABORATORY ANIMAL SCIENCE

A two-week intensive course which is organised by “Utrecht University”, The Netherlands and ”Dokuz Eylul University”, Turkey
Objectives of the course:
The objective of this course (80 hours, based on FELASA Category C): is to present basic facts and principles (knowledge and skills) that are essential for the humane use and care of laboratory animals and support a critical and analytical attitude towards the scientific knowledge underlying laboratory animal science related activities with animals recruited for research.

Venue: The course will be held at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Dokuz Eylul in Izmir-Tukey in collaboration with the Utrecht University, The Netherlands.
Duration of the course: 2 weeks
Language: English
For whom: National and international researchers who are engaged or who will be engaging in animal experiments.
Course contents: The program during the 2 week intensive course is based on the Category C recommendations of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) with regard to training of young scientists and will include the following.

Preparation protocol (introduction)
Animal welfare and experimental procedures
Experimental design
Statistics
From brainwave to publication; administrative constraints or quality assurance
International legislation
Turkey legislation
Practical training (handling) introduction
Practical training experimental techniques (Introduction)
Analgesia and Anesthesia
Euthanasia
Humane end points in laboratory animal experiments
Surgical techniques (Introduction)
Breeding of laboratory animals
Genetic standardization
Genetically modified animals
Anatomy of laboratory animals
Physiology of laboratory animals
Biochemistry of laboratory animals
Histology of laboratory animals
Nutrition of laboratory animals
Alternatives to animal procedures
Diseases of laboratory animals
Organization and procedures in the laboratory animal facility
Animal protection organization
Microbiological status of laboratory animals including gnotobiology
Basic laboratory safety and cleanliness
Health hazards and safe practice in laboratory animal research
Occupational health and safety
Laboratory fish
Behaviour models in animals
Imaging techniques in small animals
The industry point of view (housing and husbandry for laboratory animals)
2. Practical sessions:
Handling and restraining techniques
Administration of substances
Suturing techniques on inanimate models
Demonstration experimental techniques and blood sampling
Demonstration of surgical instruments, anaesthesiological methods and surgical techniques on animate model (live animal)
Anatomy and necropsy on death animals
3. Video presentation on behavior of rats in a semi natural environment and discussion movie on ethics ‘‘for whose sake’’.
4. Tour of an animal facility
5. Group tasks
Analysis of a scientific publication
Setting up a research protocol for an animal experiment
6. Preparation protocol/selfstudy (in computer room)
Criteria for awarding the Certificate of Competence or Certificate of Participation:
1. 100% Attendance
2. Group tasks (40% marks)
3. Written examination at the end of the course (60% marks)
Those who obtain 50% or more for 2 and 3 above will be awarded a ‘‘Certificate of Competence’’. Others will be awarded a ‘Certificate of Participation’.
