“ENIRDELM participants can register to the Portobello Hotel from September 23rd to October 2nd 2012 with the same price.”

The Board of ENIRDELM and members of the University of Akdeniz, Antalya, Turkey are delighted to announce the forthcoming 2012 ENIRDELM Conference, September 27th-29th, 2012.

Building on recent ENIRDELM conference topics, the theme of this year’s conference is:

Educational Leaders as Change Agents: Meeting an Uncertain Future.

This year’s theme invites practitioners, policy makers and teacher educators to reflect on and discuss the crucial role of educational leadership and leadership development in this period of radical global, societal and systemic change.

The world is currently experiencing, and we are living through, a period of unprecedented social, cultural, environmental, economic and political instability and transformation. These, together with ongoing radical technological developments, present both opportunities and challenges for us, as educators, in how we respond to the changes and challenges around us and how we lead education into the future.

It is essential that we explore how this current ‘turbulent’ climate of world uncertainty and change applies to educational leadership? Do we believe that leadership in education – in our schools, Universities and national policy departments – can be an active player in the current transformation and the creation of the future and to the understanding of and solution to real world problems?

Key questions for us all include,

How do we lead our schools into a future that we cannot foresee?
As change agents, what skills and qualities will educational leaders need to have?
How do we prepare our students and teacher educators for working and living in a time we cannot totally understand?
What are the underpinning values, competences and knowledge capacity required for leaders, educators, and students into the future?
Do we need, in this current context, to redefine values, ethics, citizenship and community building in terms of natural capital as well as social, financial, intellectual and human capital?
What systemic barriers prevent existing structures, leadership, teaching and learning from adapting to present and future needs?
Are there identifiable systemic processes and procedures which would enable and support the necessary adaptation?
What do leaders need to do to ensure that initial teacher education lays the foundation for teachers to engage professionally with an uncertain future?
How do teacher educators bridge the gap between policy (the what and why) and practice (the how)?
What are the implications for curriculum and assessment, teacher practice, pedagogy, skills, management, and supervision
What are the implications of the questions above for:

University/teacher educators
Policy makers
Educational consultants and entrepreneurs
Structures and systems of school leadershipInternational and National Curriculum and local initiatives?
A Call for Conference Papers and Workshops

Workshop facilitators are kindly asked to submit a title of their workshop and an abstract of 250-300 words which describes the main issues which will be addressed in the workshop.

Invitation
Dear ENIRDELM friends, colleagues and newcomers,

On behalf of the ENIRDELM Board and the Turkish conference committee, I invite you to the 2012 ENIRDELM Conference in Antalya, Turkey, 27-29 September. This conference marks the 21st anniversary of our network.

For twenty one years, ENIRDELM has dedicated itself to the mission of improving the quality of educational leadership and management, development and research across Europe. This has been done in the belief that there is indeed a connection between leadership actions and the quality of educational provision in schools.

This year, on the 21st anniversary of ENIRDELM, we focus on the uncertainty of the future in this rapid changing world and the roles of educational leaders as change agents. The conference theme is “Educational Leaders as Change Agents: Meeting an Uncertain Future”. At our Antalya conference, we are planning to open a new gate to theoretical and practical discussions about exploring the uncertain future and the role of educational leadership in uncertain future. The written and orally shared views and suggestions at the conference are expected to spread and inspire extensive discussions on educational leadership.

The theme of the conference and the conclusions which will be drawn are also expected to inspire discussions and new efforts on the reform of the Turkish educational system with approximately fifteen million students, seven hundred thousand teachers and sixty five thousand schools, not including higher education.

Social, economic, political and cultural change all over the world makes problematic the development of sustainable policies in educational leadership as well as in all other areas. There is a strong need for systematic scientific research on the need and the causes of change. Our conference should shed light on the conceptualization and recognition of the uncertainty that will affect all our futures.

We hope that the conference theme is of interest to you and we encourage you to join us, to contribute to the conference activities as well as to celebrate the 21 anniversary of ENIRDELM in Antalya, Turkey, 27-29 September 2012.We expect to see a diverse group of researchers, consultants, school teachers, principals, trainers and policy makers who will share ideas, research findings and experiences bearing in mind the ENIRDELM mission of improving educational leadership. The ENIRDELM Board particularly welcomes new conference participants and those older members who have not had the opportunity to attend recent conferences.

Because the conference is at the end of summer, it offers you the chance to:

(1) participate in the comprehensive discussion of theory and practice,

(2) spend fascinating days and nights in Antalya to experience the combination of sea, sun, nature and history. We recommend that you participate inthe optional excursion arranged by the local organizers on Sunday (30 September).

We are looking forward to seeing all of you in Antalya.

Best regards,

Mualla Aksu
Chairperson of ENIRDELM
