WHY STEM?

WHY STEM?

STEM; Science, Technology, Engineering and Matematichs are combined with 21st century skills. It is important for individuals to contribute to solving complex problems. It is expected that individuals who search, question and criticize the present and future worlds will find creative solutions to complex problems in real life. In this framework you need to look a little bit of history to understand the STEM içinI.

Considering the researches on the historical development of STEM, the dates of 1957 and 2001 and 2012 are considered as a turning point. The launch of Sputnik-1, the first spacecraft of the Russians in 1957, revealed that the Soviet Union, at that time, was the pioneer of a new model in the fields of Science-Technology-Engineering and Mathematics. The United States founded NASA in 1958 and renewed its education and training programs by giving importance to Science, Technology and Engineering. As a matter of fact, it took the results of these studies in a short time.

In 2001 Prof.Dr. The concept of STEM by Judith RAMALEY was demonstrated. Even though the STEM concept was first introduced in 2001, interdisciplinary study approaches have been used in earlier times.

In 2012, former US President Barack OBAMA; Asında oluştur The Leadership of the Future depends on raising our students in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering and technology. Ve The statement made a big impact on the spread of STEM understanding throughout the world.

The professions of the future evolve seriously. Maybe we won’t remember most of the professions we’re doing today. A US study found that the 30 most important jobs of the future were identified. Some of them are;

Augmented reality Architect, Digital Identity Planner, Digital Archaeologist, Online community organizer, Intelligent road designer, Personal care coordinator, Robot coordinator, 3D printer engineer, Wearable technology design Engineer, Cloud computing specialist.

Creative and innovative thinking, real-life complex problems, Information-Communication and Media literacy, data mining is expected to gain many skills, such as individuals. These skills, which are seen as 21st century skills and expected to be in individuals in the world of the future, have been revealed through studies conducted within the framework of STEM education.

It is a great mistake to assume that the STEM field is simply robotic. STEM studies can take place with different learning designs. Project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, learning through mathematical modeling, design-oriented learning, learning approaches such as computational thinking are also included in STEM.

Especially in our country it has been published by the Istanbul Aydın University to understand and assess the level of understanding of STEM Turkey must read the report.

If we want to take part as a country in the World of the Future, we need to reflect 21st century skills and STEM education and practices seriously.
