What is this STEM? Why STEM? STEM in our country

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Stem means ”root” in English. In other words, it is an educational approach that can form the root of the education system as it is thought through this meaning. STEM education involves the teaching of basic sciences such as science and mathematics, integrated with the application possibilities of engineering and technology, and covers all levels of education.

In the researches, it has been observed that the results of global evaluation exam such as PISA (The Program for International Student Assessment) and TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) have increased in many countries that use the STEM model such as USA, UK, Japan. Therefore, many countries have integrated the STEM model into the education system.

Turkey’s only technology and not rely on importing, producing and well-trained manpower in this field in the STEM areas in order to come to a country with the worldwide competitiveness is very important for our country. It may be possible to progress in science and technology by improving the level of achievement of the young population in STEM areas, improving the ability of analytical and critical thinking, and improving problem solving skills.

The vision of Turkey’s 2023 Vision and the strategic documents of the Ministry of National Education reveals the necessity of defining science-technology-engineering-mathematics education on the scale of our country. However, the studies in this area are still in the beginning phase.
