What are the relationships between STEM disciplines?
What are the relationships between Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines?
Using the method of observation and experiment in science to answer the questions asked to understand the functioning of the world. By designing an experiment, you can test a hypothesis and collect data to determine whether this hypothesis is true or false. You can create a data-driven result of the world’s functioning. Scientists develop scientific knowledge in this way.
Engineers, by contrast, use scientific knowledge to solve problems. Engineering is to use the scientific knowledge to identify the problems encountered in daily life and to solve them. First, they develop prototypes, test prototypes and collect the necessary data, then use the data to decide whether this prototype should be improved or reproduced. If the prototype is deemed appropriate and replicated, it becomes a technology.
Technology is often very complex or consists mainly of electronic circuits, etc. but this is not actually true. Technology; A door or a door knocker may be a new plastic or a computer program or a process for quality control. Technology; it helps scientists ask more questions and do research, and then develop more scientific knowledge. Scientists answer questions they have never been able to answer through technology, or ask new questions, so the cycle of inquiry, research, invention and product development continues.
Mathematics in these processes; helps scientists and engineers in measuring, analyzing, abstraction, formula extraction, model development, communicating, and making processes and experiments reproducible. Mathematics is used in all fields of Science, Engineering and Technology.
Nowadays, it is necessary for teachers to realize interdisciplinary STEM training activities in their schools in order to ensure that their students consider the concepts of science, engineering, technology and mathematics as a whole as a whole and understand that there are very close relations between these disciplines. Thus, students can prepare for the profession in the future STEM sector.
Science and engineering is a never-ending cycle. Science supports the development of engineering prototypes, and engineering products enable the development of scientific knowledge processes. The study of the science and engineering cycle also provides the disciplines of technology and mathematics.
