ISLAMIC ECONOMICS WORKSHOP II
“Islamic Economics and the Market”
March 29-30, 2014; Istanbul, Turkey
The second Islamic Economics Workshop will be held on March 29-30, 2014 in Istanbul. The workshop will be organized by İstanbul Şehir Üniversitesi, İLKE İlim Kültür Eğitim Derneği, İktisadi Girişim ve İş Ahlakı Derneği and İlmi Etüdler Derneği under the title of “Islamic Economics and the Market”. The workshop, in which the importance and meaning of the market in Islamic economics will be discussed, is expected to host experts from different universities around the world.
In the first workshop that was held on March 2-3, 2014 with the title “Basic Concepts and Thoughts”, studies on Islamic economics were evaluated and ideas about how the area of “Islamic economics” should be framed were debated. In this workshop, it was also specified that in order for “Islamic Economics” to become a worldwide economic system, studies and theories about micro and macroeconomics needed to be produced.
In accordance with this aim, the second workshop is planned to revolve around the topic market, which is a basic and symbolic concept of the current financial system. Thus, the concept of market as one of the pillars of the capitalist financial system, or its institution, is intended to be discussed from the point of view of Islamic economics. Some topics that may be discussed in the contents of this workshop are listed below:
Islamic economics and free market
Debates on socialism in Islamic economics
Welfare, distribution and justice
How should the markets be classified according to Islamic economics?
How should the market operate in Islamic economics?
Market tools in Islamic economics
Market “institutions” in Islamic economics
How should the transition from current market institutions to the conditions of market of Islamic economics occur?
In the workshop that will be held with a limited number of experts, presentations will be discussed in detail by the assigned debaters and participants. Output from the workshop will be published as a book and presented to the public. For this reason, the articles that will be presented in the workshop should not have been previously published, and should not be publicized in the future on another ground. Participants are expected to send their articles in English. Accommodation for the participants will be arranged by the organization. In addition, a limited number of participants will be supported with a travel grant.
