International Deutscholympiade

The International Deutscholympiade, the world’s biggest contest for German language learners, is gathering steam again: next summer, from 25 July to 5 August 2022, we’ll be coming together in person again for the finals in Hamburg!

In 2020, the International Deutscholympiade was up against a very special challenge owing to the pandemic. While we couldn’t gather together in person last year, with the support of the participating countries we were able to offer young language talents around the world an unforgettable online experience. Still, the International Deutscholympiade thrives on personal encounters. So we’re delighted to be able to invite you to the 2022 IDO in person again.

We’re calling on some 13 million German learners age 14 to 17 at schools around the world to take part in the contest. In national preliminary rounds held in over 70 participating countries, over 140 of the contestants will then qualify to travel to Hamburg in the summer of 2022 for the German Language Olympic finals. Selected teachers will also be invited to accompany them to Hamburg and take part in advanced training in language teaching methods.

The young finalists can once again look forward to a diverse and exciting programme in which they’ll have plenty of opportunity to meet other teenagers from around the world as well as all sorts of different companies, creatives and people working in culture and the arts. The IDO is held by the Goethe-Institut in association with the IDV, the International Association of German Teachers.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
The winners of the national qualifying rounds in each country may take part in the finals, in which they’ll be competing online against the world’s best young German learners in one of the three different levels of language proficiency. But the IDO is not just about language skills: it’s also about intercultural and interpersonal skills, about your ability to work in an international team.
